15. Kenyata

Majestic Twelve frontman Kenyata Sullivan is, by all accounts, his own little critter ""Kenyata Sullivan has a long and storied indie rock history, going back to the late 1980's - publishing zines as a teenager (Suburban Landscapes, Wannatrade), sequencing and releasing the FED compilations (featuring the very first compilation appearances by Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes), Britt Daniel (Spoon), Bouncing Souls, My Favorite, etc), founding Opulence! Records (Dufus, Spite, the legendary ""Noise Kills Punk Dead"" comp sponsored by Thora-Zine magazine), and founding the W.E. Festival (Mooney Suzuki in 1998, Dismemberment Plan in 1996, Martha Mooke five years before she went on tour with David Bowie, Ryan Gentles two years before The Strokes, etc, etc). He's known in the underground for having a great ear, but is perhaps better known as the front man for the notorious Pandora's Lunchbox (PLB). He was the guy who told all the majors ""no"" when they came calling, and all of the big five did. He as well as the rest of the band frown upon conventional music conglomerates that censor or market music to boring extremes. Putting songs in a virtual tailspin of commercial hypocrisy that in turn cater to the monopolization of corporate radio, label and ticketing entities; that suck the life out of musicians and expose the fans and new listeners to undue hassels. He was the guy who said no to a slot on the Empire Records movie soundtrack when they wanted his publishing, but still gave away his music left and right to fans instead of selling it - back when it meant mailing out free cassettes to everyone who took the time to write a letter, instead of just posting MP3s. This was the guy who threw his amplifier on an A+R man who said his band would be ""the next Beatles, the next Rolling Stones"", just because that was sheer blasphemy. He was written about in Raygun, POPsmear, Flipside, Jersey Beat, Alternative Press, Details, even interviewed on MTV, and he was doing it all on his own terms. But in 1997, without any fanfare or even a ...

18. Alive and Well Records

Alive and Well Records is an independent, recently formed record label, operating in Asheville and Durham, North Carolina. We're interested in emerging artists in the Southeast region. Our goal is to partner with these artists to help them reach as wide an audience as possible. Our artists are writing and recording their own material and are dedicated to honing their craft and building their fan base from the ground up. We believe demand for original music comes from word of mouth and through the hard work of artists making great albums and playing exciting shows. Our background is as musicians playing in bands, writing music, recording and pounding the pavement for gigs. We did this for years while trying to promote ourselves at the same time and found it to be an exhausting and limiting endeavor, always wishing we had someone in our corner. Over the last several years we've operated a recording studio and gotten involved in producing and recording other artists. This experience has given us the good fortune to come across several exciting artists. We found ourselves continually wishing to be involved with these artists after the recording was wrapped up. We believed in them and wanted to put our experience to good use in helping them succeed once the hard work of getting heard began. We've watched the pendulum swing from artists wanting to ""get signed"" to DIY, and now back to an interest in partnering with labels. The key we believe is the partnership. We've set out to truly partner with our artists for a creative and mutually beneficial relationship, to create a label from the point of view of the artist, the kind that we would have wanted. Thanks a lot for visiting and we hope you enjoy the music!
