The fact that no similar medical outreach has taken place in the villages we visited, should give some insight into the complexities of organizing and preparing for such a project. Successful short-term missions hinge on an experienced sending organization, like CMF, along with strong local support, the receiving personnel. It took quite some time to make the necessary contacts and begin the networking process with CMF's soon to be partners from New Tribe Missions. They began educating CMF regarding the challenges, cultural barriers, and political issues; while CMF began to educate them on the intricacies, needs, and protocol involved in their medical projects. As time drew closer, the plans for a small pilot project became a reality. The team consisted of 4 CMF volunteers along with 7 volunteers from Siberia. CMF planned to visit Southern Siberia between Mongolia and China. One week before departure, however, circumstances required CMF to change their ultimate destination. This was an amazing turn of events, as the originally planned village wound up being devastated by earthquakes while CMF was there. The earthquakes reached as high as 8.5 on the Richter scale. Buildings were destroyed, people were without homes, there were tremendous casualties, and the roads were not usable.
